Aim of the Master’s Program

The M.Sc. Urban Transformation is a two-year Master’s program at the Department of Spatial Planning.

The program is designed for highly qualified students who want to learn how cities and regions can be transformed in innovative ways. It builds on Bachelor’s programs in spatial planning, but graduates from related fields, such as urban geography, are also welcome.

The program understands planning as an interdisciplinary field, which means that it combines knowledge from different disciplines and connects theory with practice. Courses and projects combine international debates on structural change and spatial transformation with practical questions of planning and governance in cities and regions.

Urban transformation is caused by technological innovation, socio-economic change and environmental challenges. These transformation processes are often complex and may also face resistance. Hence the program includes lessons in policy design and governance. 

Students learn about the goals, processes and tools of urban transformation. They also explore how urban and spatial planning is changing today, including the growing role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI).
