Assessing Adaptive Capacity of Urban Coastal Communities to Flooding: The Case of La Paz District, Philippines

Ms. Grace Kirugumi (Batch 2020/2021) recently published the article in the SAGE Journal “Environment and Urbanization ASIA” together with Dr. Mario R. Delos Reyes.

The article examines how urban coastal communities in La Paz District, Philippines adapt to flooding by analyzing key factors such as resources, infrastructure, information and governance. Using mixed-methods approach, which included interviews and the analytic hierarchy process, indices of adaptive capacity. The results show varying capacities across La Paz communities, institutions and infrastructure are most critical.

The publication resulted out of her thesis within the Master program SPRING which is jointly offered by TU Dortmund University and the University of the Philippines - School of Urban and Regional Planning (UP SURP), and was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
