The programme in Ghana is about sustainable development planning and management within the context of regional planning. Participants are taken through the rudiments of planning at the local and regional levels. The programme takes cognizance of rapid urbanization and population growth being experienced in the developing world as well as climate change. The emphasis of the programme is on the techniques, methods and tools for regional planning. It seeks to involve and address the needs of multi-stakeholders within the region.
Participants acquire skills in sustainable and participatory planning and management approaches as well as techniques. Based on these, students study a particular district and involve stakeholders to plan for the area's development. During this process, students meet local government officials, local politicians, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders involved in district development.
As part of the course work, students take research methods and statistical techniques which will prepare them for the field work of their Master Thesis and the workshop. The courses in governance, political and sociology of development are specifically oriented toward the Ghanian context.
